Dell (1996)

A catalog-era enterprise web design built around a literal black page frame, vivid flat color-block ribbon cards tinted in sage, salmon, periwinkle, sky, peach and lime, chunky Arial-Black display titles, Times Roman body copy, and an entire visual vocabulary of pre-Photoshop hand-cut GIF stickers (NEW! bursts, award seals, beveled product photos).

Design Philosophy

Overview

Dell's 1996 home page is a perfectly preserved fossil of catalog-era enterprise web design. Every page sits inside a literal black HTML-table frame, and each product line gets a flat color-block "ribbon card" tinted in one of eight catalog colors (sage, salmon, peach, lime, sky, steel, periwinkle, olive). Display headlines run chunky Arial Black 36px weight 900; body copy is Times Roman 14.

Key Characteristics

  • Literal black page frame — the browser window treated as a printed picture frame
  • Eight tinted ribbon-card colors, one per product family, no gradients or shadows
  • Times Roman serif body — the era's signature against sans-serif UI
  • Dell Red (#e91d2a) reserved only for the CTA panel and top-right phone number
  • Hand-cut GIF stickers: yellow BUY-a-DELL tag, NEW! bursts, round award seals

Do's and Don'ts

Keep the literal black page frame on every page. Reserve Dell red for the CTA panel and phone number. Use the eight ribbon tints as a family — pick one per product line. Never soften a corner or add soft shadows; the era is hard borders and flat fills.
